DETERGENT INDUSTRY

The domestic detergent market has been estimated at Rs.3800.00 crores and in volume terms it is estimated to be 14 lac tonnes.  The major players in this sector includes Hindustan Lever Limited with a 44% share, Nirma with 25% share and a sizeable share of Henkel Spic.

Zeolite is a key input for detergents and is used by manufacturers all over the world.  It is reportedly an eco- friendly substitute of sodium tri – poly phosphate (STPP) currently used by most domestic detergent players.

Zeolite in the country is used in detergent manufacture by Chennai based Henkel Spic which is the only company in India using it in its brand HENKO.  The company has a captive Zeolite unit with a production capacity of 10,000 tonnes.  It consumes 2000 tonnes for its detergent plant.

The State owned NELCO will be starting production of Zeolite very soon at its Rs.30.00 crores unit of 10,000 tonnes capacity near the Aluminium facility at Daman Jodi, Orissa. Zeolite is a by-product of the Aluminium making process.

Zeolite costs 40% less than STPP.  The current price of Zeolite is Rs.20,000 per tonne whereas STPP costs between Rs.30,000 and Rs.35,000 per tonne.

As people are becoming more and more aware of the polluting effect by Phosphate builders like STPP, which contributes to about less than 1% of the total Phosphate content in water, the use of STPP based detergent would reduce.
